Summary:
I upgraded my wifi router and combined it with the SB1000 signal booster. I measured the performance with a spectrum analyzer and found that the power claims of 20 times the original signal power were accurate. Testing the range with real wifi equipment (my laptop and my wifi enabled cell phone) showed that there was a noticeable improvement in range. The net real world range improvement I experienced was about a two times range increase. The claims of the product were 20 X power (verified!) and UP to 3 times the range. I only got about two times range improvement.
Warning- Geek details of testing to follow.
(I apologize that this is poorly written. I'm not feeling the creativity to write creatively... but still there is some technical content here you might enjoy. Some of my math is off, like 15 dBm increase is actually about 31 times the power NOT 25 times the power... But these are all just rough estimates, so sue me.)

I was having all sorts of problems with my network... It was hard to tell if it was the DSL modem, or the wifi router... Or my ISP... Anyway, I upgraded to an all in one DSL, wifi and router. (Actiontec GTW84WN).
I also bought a "Amped Wireless HIGH POWER 1000mw Wifi Signal Booster" model SB1000. Half the reviews of this said it was the crappiest most fraudulent product EVER, and the other half read like it was the best thing since porn on the internet. I expected the product to be totally bogus.
I opened it up the base of the powered antenna, (had to remove 4 screws) and there was not much inside. Though it did look like it at least has an RF RX LNA (Radio Frequency Receive Low Noise Amplifier). I was even MORE suspicious after looking inside. It comes with a 7 db gain antenna, and supposedly "20 X the Power". It claims 1000mW instead of the normal 50mW.
So I hooked up the spectrum analyzer, and did some data acquisition! *(See note below.)
I measured three signal strengths. This was for transmit only. The base line was with the standard Actiontec wifi device using their supplied small antennas. The second test was with a high quality 7 dBm gain antenna (D-Link), and the third test was with using the SB1000 powered antenna.
I was really surprised to find that the high quality (D-Link) 7 dBm gain antenna measured exactly that. Using SB1000 was an other 7-8 dBm improvement over that. So the SB1000 does truly amplify the transmit signal. Surprise surprise!!!!
Measured with the spectrum analyzer there was about a 25 times TOTAL power increase when using the SB1000 over the supplied antennas. You get about a 5 X power increase from the larger external antenna and 5 X power increase from the power amplifier.
Now 25 times power increase does not give you 25 times the range! It's more like 3 times the range. The other issue that is encountered with an amplified signal, is the actual quality of the amplified signal. To receive a good signal you need power AND low noise. If someone uses a really loud megaphone, but the voice quality is all distorted it is NOT going to help you understand what they are saying at range. With the spectrum analyzer I am just measuring the signal strength, or loudness, NOT the clarity of the signal. In fact, you may find a quieter (less powerful signal) with less distortion actually gives you better range. These are all very subtle things, and I can see it would be very hard to decide as a marketing person what information to put on the box so that people actually buy your product. Everyone understands Power, but to try to explain that a product with less power actually could outperform something with more power would be very hard.
Anyway I'm happy with my SB1000 upgrade.
Also, one funny think about the performance increases in the real world with using a boosted signal... A side benefit is that since the radio spectrum for wifi is very crowded, and the individual wifi routers can detect signal conflicts, if you use a more powerful signal, you can get your neighbors routers to chose an other channel away from your signal, which improves your performance.. This actually may be the biggest benefit of using a powered antenna.
